Many people said that Source engine's Raw Mouse Input feels out of tone though I dare not use it. What I did was repapplied MarkC fix for 8/8.1 (with no acceleration, EPP off, 100% dpi scale etc), restarted, noticed the hex values were changed meaning it worked. 8/2/2023 0 Comments Typeeto bluetooth![]() That was pretty minimal work, and it’s only required the first time you pair your devices. In just a second or two you’ll see a little floating window with the name of your iOS device that says “start typing”. Simply confirm that they’re the same on the iOS side and you’re done. You’ll get a code on screen on the Mac and on the iOS device. On the Mac side, tap the Pair button next to the iOS device. The two devices should be able to see each other. Open Bluetooth Settings on both the Mac and the iOS device you want to control. ![]() ![]() The one-time setup process goes like this. When you launch Typeeto, it installs as a menubar app. Typeeto is free in the Mac App Store and requires nothing to be installed on the iOS side. I think we’ve got a couple of scenarios here that might help people out, so let’s look at Typeeto. As a road warrior you really want to reduce weight and simplify things, not add complexity. Or you could get one of those keyboards that talks to more than one device with a physical switch to go back and forth, but now you’re carrying three things around instead of two. You could also drag a Bluetooth keyboard around with you and use the Mac keyboard to talk to the Mac and the second keyboard to talk to the iOS device. Nothing against Duet at all if you’re going to use it for a while at a stretch, but it’s not a quick process to set up. The two connected easily through the menubar app, but once they were connected I had to open up Displays Preferences to set the arrangement of the windows so that I could move windows back and forth between displays. ![]() I wrestled my lightning cable out from its entanglement with my headphones and Apple Pencil in my bag, then I had to wrestle loose my USB-C to USB adapter for the MacBook. I fired it up to remind myself how to use it.įirst I had to wire the two devices together. Duet works really well and if you’re going to be working for a long time on a desk it’s a great solution. You could use one of those apps that allows you to use your iOS display as a secondary monitor, like the awesome Duet Display from to solve the same problem. What if you could just use a keystroke on your Mac to allow you to type on the iPad and then flip back to typing on the Mac? That would be pretty cool. But typing on the iPad is a pain without a real keyboard. Maybe do your web surfing on the Mac and read and write email on an iPad. One solution is to split tasks between your Mac and your iOS device. This is especially true if you’re on travel where it’s impractical to carry a second monitor around with you. If you have a MacBook or MacBook Pro, I bet there are times where you wish you had a little more screen real estate. Using a Bluetooth keyboard with the AppleTV can make you happier, and if you’re watching TV with a laptop right near you, why not use its keyboard instead of that aggravating remote? But most of the time we end up scrolling right/left/up/down and doing a lot of swearing when we try to type on the AppleTV. If you have voice recognition in your country for the Apple remote, that actually works surprisingly well, especially for passwords. The AppleTV is the most obvious problem – typing (even with the new remote) is a nightmare. Before I walk you through it, let’s set up a couple of problems it might solve. Typeeto from /… lets you use a Mac as a Bluetooth keyboard for your iOS devices, including the AppleTV. ![]() I’ve got a cool little utility that may or may not solve a problem for you. ![]() 8/2/2023 0 Comments Send to kindle by email![]() ![]() Navigate to where you saved your PDF and select it. Yes, many of those are the best bits and it is a pain to lose them, but you still keep experience levels and identified equipment, so the next run is going to feel that much easier. Being knocked out in a dungeon simply means losing all your unidentified items. On the plus side, as far as roguelike design goes, Märchen Forest is quite reasonable. On the other hand, you’ll often force yourself to do it anyway, because if you don’t use exploration as your answer to grinding, those bosses will still roll you through sheer brute force. There are all kinds of treasure chests and bits of loot that you’ll spy on the other side of a wall as you amble around, but finding the keys for these things often involves backtracking or heading off in the opposite direction to the exit of the dungeon, and the slow, ambling walking pace plus that encounter rate makes such exploration unappetising. Märchen Forest wants to encourage players to explore these dungeons. Märchen Forest’s combat isn’t necessarily easy thanks to its many traditional roguelike proclivities, but it’s roughly the equivalent of a button-mashing Paper Mario, and with the frequency of combat in the dungeons, progress can become exhausting after a while. When the enemy attacks, you dodge out of the way to avoid taking damage, and then spam the attack button as often as possible (depending on your character’s speed statistic) until the enemy is either dead, or can take another swing at you (at which point you’re best served to duck out of the way again). ![]() Less interesting is the combat, which plays out in real-time, but isn’t overly engaging. It’s a contrast that is subtly woven together in a truly engaging manner. A visual distinction between the comforts and security of home vs the cold, unforgiving road, in other words. Deliberately so, I feel, because the non-combat side of the adventure uses a different perspective and is inviting and warm. ![]() In the dungeon, the top-down perspective is alienating and distancing. The ease in which Märchen Forest transitions between surrealistic point-and-click adventure and dungeon crawler is impeccably slick they’re two things that feel like they should be separate, and yet somehow in collaboration they work. Then you discover a doorway to an underground dungeon complex, learn that that’s where your mother disappeared many years ago, and then you decide to go delving to try and learn what happened to her. It’s so blatantly inspired by Atelier that our little hero delightfully chirps out “taru” (barrel!) every time she sees one, just like the Atelier girls are famous for. In this blissfully twisted and faintly sinister home “town,” you collect those resources to make potions with your grandpa, which cumulates with you producing a potion that makes it snow and everyone is happy. You head out into a little forest area, talk to a rainbow coloured duck, a snake with a thing for LSD and a genius who has decided to get revenge on a river by emptying it one bucket of water at a time, and by doing so you get the necessary ingredients to brew up potions. Having played Märchen Forest: Mylne and the Forest Gift, I understand Alice’s sentiment, for the game is best described as a solid example of something that is curiouser and curiouser!.įor the first couple of hours, it’s a surrealistic little riff on the Atelier series concept of collecting resources to “cook” up stuff in a cauldron. The designs are hyper-versions of the CG creations, and look very East-meets-West. It has a loud, colourful feel of an anime, with the kinetic energy one expects from a Saturday morning cartoon. Characters falling down as a joke seems to be taken from The Simpsons’ rule book, but sometimes the timing is a bit too fast – compressed into 10-minute episodes, it feels off and loses its punch. However, there’s also a lot of joke/explain joke/recite joke again so that the back three rows get it too that kind of patronising to an audience is tedious, and incredibly odd given this is also a show where the not Sam Jackson character recreates the infamous line from Snakes on a Plane, but for kids. The plots don’t really inspire much, but the writing sometimes rises above the call of duty, with some laughs and animated beats aiming for classic animated comedy shows, and sometimes even achieving moments of out and out insane brilliance. That’s the message of this show: work with your friends to beat everyone else. The series is all about alpha males, so, while most of the time it’s centred around any character other than Turbo, it all feels samey in each snail’s goal only being to win and be the best. Thankfully, though, the show settles into a specially-built city for Turbo and pals, which includes bug antics such as racing against insects and reptiles, destruction derbies, dungball-football matches and the like. But even in this mildly sympathetic look at Holmes, she isn’t a likable character. This version of Holmes that Hulu created mourns Gibbons’ death, worries about her company’s lack of viable technology and even asks her mother what would happen if she quit Theranos. “The Dropout” still tries to humanize her, taking a bit of creative license to imagine personal aspects of her life that we will never know. His widow, Rochelle Gibbons, said that when her husband died, Holmes never reached out - instead, an office manager just asked that she return Ian’s laptop.Īs we watch Rochelle learn of Ian’s death, Holmes no longer feels like a young woman who’s in over her head. In 2013, Gibbons died by suicide shortly before he was required to testify in a lawsuit about Theranos’ technology. But for viewers who know Gibbons’ fate, each of his jovial appearances summons a sense of foreboding. In early episodes, Stephen Fry’s performance as chief scientist Ian Gibbons is a highlight of the show. She recalled in court last year, “I decided I was going to build a life by building this company.” The show also recounts Holmes’ alleged rape when she was a Stanford freshman in an attempt to contextualize the personal catastrophes that made her so hellbent on achieving fame and success. But as she dives head-first into being a CEO, the stomach-turning dynamics of her secretive relationship with Balwani are glossed over in a way that’s difficult to watch. “The Dropout” makes it clear that Balwani isn’t a hero in the Theranos story. We’re also forced to watch as she falls in love with Sunny Balwani, her eventual COO who’s 18 years older than her, despite knowing that in 2021, Holmes would tearfully allege in court that he routinely abused her over their 12-year relationship. Seyfried’s interpretation of Holmes is reasonably convincing as she goes to deranged lengths to convince investors, board members, Walgreens partners and her devoted employees that she isn’t full of shit (spoiler alert: she’s full of shit). ![]() You can’t look away, but you don’t really enjoy the sight. From this perspective, “The Dropout” feels like watching a car crash in slow motion. The series opens with fictionalized footage of Holmes on trial, but other than these brief asides, the story of Theranos is told in a straightforward, linear narrative. These online streamers keep churning out this content because they know we will watch - we’re desperate and eager to understand how people can be so corrupted by the promise of money and fame that they will sacrifice their morality.įeaturing Amanda Seyfried in the lead role, “The Dropout” is the first fictional re-telling of Holmes’ story, which we know so well by now: The youngest female self-made billionaire vows to change the healthcare system with ground-breaking technology, only for the world to discover that the woman they compared to Steve Jobs was peddling technology that never even worked. Yet today, Hulu will release the first three episodes of “The Dropout,” and soon, Apple TV+ will unveil its “Bad Blood” movie, starring Jennifer Lawrence as Holmes. We read “Bad Blood,” the Theranos tell-all by journalist John Carreyrou, whose reporting directly contributed to Theranos’ downfall from a $10 billion valuation to nothing we watched the HBO documentary “The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley ” and we observed in real time as Silicon Valley journalists live-tweeted her four-month-long trial, which was so popular that onlookers had to wake up at 3 a.m. Even before Elizabeth Holmes was found guilty of defrauding investors in January, we had little left to learn from her story, which has already birthed true crime podcasts, books and documentaries. And lest we forget when Netflix and Hulu both released Fyre Fest documentaries the same week, or when Netflix rushed to option a film about the alleged husband-wife bitcoin launderers before their case has been resolved.īut when you’re told the same story again and again without gleaning anything new, it loses its charm. ![]() There’s also Apple TV+’s upcoming “WeCrashed” series, based on the podcast “WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork,” and then there’s Showtime’s recent “Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber,” featuring stars like Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Uma Thurman. Hulu’s “The Dropout,” which focuses on the fall of Theranos, is the latest. That’s the premise of an entire emerging genre of media, mostly produced by streaming platforms, which chronicle the most salacious stories in tech, startups and wealth gone wrong.
